Our fireplace is in the basement and we don't use it for fires. Instead, I built a small well lit photo box that fits nicely into the fire box. All of the pottery on this site are photographed in this box. Well....today I went to take more photographs and found black soot and other debris covering everything in the firebox as well as the hearth and surrounding surfaces. After spending way too much time cleaning everything off, the photo box is back in working order.
So what happened to cause the mess? I suspect that a squirrel or a bird got into the chimney and all hell broke loose and chimney crap found its way past the closed flu damper. I have not nor will I open the flu damper to see if anything is in the chimney. What else could it have been? Perhaps a flying witch or Halloween bat?
